Artist Spotlight, Carmen Smith from Hollywood, FL

Carmen Smith’s paintings explore emotional and intellectual attachments. Central to her practice is engagement with the urban landscape and observation of the architectural styles, colors, light, nature, and the cycle of renewal and decay of places in her own neighborhood and home area of South Florida. Her careful selection of familiar but anonymous locations combined with use of bright, almost neon color and dramatic light work to reinforce her central concept and idea that places influence our experiences, inform our memories, and can even become part of our identity. Carmen’s imagery comes from her own drawings, reference photographs, historical architectural research, news stories, found photographs, stories and memories. Her work inspires a novel perspective on imagery often observed passively, and one gets the sense that there is a metaphysical presence in her simple, vibrant, psychologically charged compositions.
